My review of Fuji’s latest DSLR-killer has gone live over at Tools & Toys.

Epson Expression XP-640

With all its paper trays and the control panel folded away, the Epson XP-640 seems impossibly small for an all-in-one.

Being able to complete the entire setup (including a firmware update) without plugging the printer into a computer was a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, the compact design means it can be hard to tell the various paper trays apart at first, especially when the printer isn’t mounted at eye level. On the bright side, the printer works well, printing quickly and quietly. At least it does once you set the print quality to the best settings in your printer dialog. Especially for photo printing, results are extremely impressive for such an affordable printer.

An Impossible Upgrade

Yesterday, as I sipped my first coffee of the morning, I was already celebrating the release of tension that would accompany Apple’s unveiling of their new Mac line-up. Finally, after years of waiting, I’d have a clear upgrade path and wouldn’t have to settle for a solution that only addresses part of my needs.

Needless to say, that is not what happened. Instead, a navel-gazing Apple gave us the MacBook Stripper™ and spent two hours on stage offering deadpan descriptions of how video editors and DJs were going to start doing their work on a laptop.

If you’re like me, you’ve mostly given up on dedicated scanning hardware in favour of your smartphone. There’s an app for that, after all. Several.

This approach is more than fine for basic document and receipt scans, but there’s one area where dedicated scanners remain a requirement: photo scanning. I suspect most of us have boxes hidden away somewhere with old family photos. Treasure chests of memories.
